first song that reeled me in: "Too Tired" CIRCLES, 2021
This artist (also known as KALI) has a few releases to select from, most of them singles and EPs. As such: I will not be breaking down the sound album by album. This will be more of an "Honorable Mention" entry. A memoir of that time I got better acquainted with Superfan.
CIRCLES (2021) & Maltman and Effie (2022) are this artist's EPs that I found. As individual albums: they are very clear in their voice and sound. When comparing the two to each other, I find that Maltman and Effie has a bit more of an edge to it. It is the cooler older sister to the previous. Effortlessly swish and impossibly cool. CIRCLES is more the album you set in your headphones when you are feeling particularly "thinky". When you take a walk down the sidewalk through downtown and end up at the ice cream shop. (It's sunny out with a gentle, warm breeze - of COURSE your feet lead you to frozen treats.) Or perhaps the soundtrack to the wistful day you bring yourself out for coffee. You sit there in the cafe: your book open, in hand, but let's be honest - today is for simply pondering between the people you watch. Quietly (and perhaps a bit dully) philosophizing on what it's "all about".
The overall theme is: peaceful and easy. And if you play the first selection on a day you wake up feeling "blah" (feeling grey, if you ask Robert Smith) and make your way to the second, you might just be able to turn your day around before it's too late. Think: Billie Eilish "Bellyache" and Crumb's "Locket", but more modern. Not so 2017.
It's dreamy, it's catchy, it's so dead on and current it would hurt - if it wasn't so smooth. With a voice like Cool Whip, but way cooler. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you: Superfan.
