neo-soul
first song that reeled me in: "Nah It Ain't The Same" MAN MADE, 2021

For anyone who ever got into Erykah Badu and wanted more but didn't quite know where to look. For anyone who loved Lauryn Hill's cool disposition on her laid back tracks. For anyone who just needs to chilllll, man... and have a nice, calm day. I share with you: Greentea Peng. Giving you exactly the environment necessary to propel you in that nice, hot shower with soft lighting in the bathroom. Incense. Tea. CBD. Giving you that hippie ease while still propelling you to accomplish things and be confident while you do so.

I don't have much experience in the neo-soul game. And as such: I'm just going to be highlighting some tracks in particular off of Greentea Peng's two records.

MAN MADE (2021)
"Make Noise" kick starts the album in the key of: "unbothered". Very much: emotions unclcockable while still feeling everything and more. This collection has a quiet wisdom with a cool rhythm. This first track best prepares you for it.
"This Sound" gives a kind of nod to music like The Bamboos (see previous entry) with its brand of funk. By the time "Be Careful" kicks in with its sweet flute, you begin to realize how badly you've needed to slow down and just listen to some music. In this case, fortunately: good music. Charming you right out of your little basket. And then comes "Nah It Ain't The Same", the track that started it all, for me. Giving more of an easy beat / bass and drums of a classic Badu sound.

GREENZONE 108 (2022)
"Feint" comes in a bit hard / the edgier older sister of "Nah It Ain't The Same" & "Make Noise". (Give me tht 90's hip hop sound, thank you.) "Look to Him" gives us an easier overall sound paired with more attitude - I'm certainly coming back to this one. The following track, "Stuck in the Middle", gives a clear view to the bridge between the two albums. So rich and easy on the ears, while maintaining its cool. Butterscotch drizzle for your ears (don't try this at home). "Your Mind" brings in some sweet, simplified Hendrix-esque guitar to accompany Peng's lounging vocals. "Three Eyes Open" gives more of a classic reggae feel. You're laying on your back, a plastic floating raft separates you from the natural water. Your skin is warm, drenched in sun and the drum and strings that only reggae can bring. You hear your friends being idiots on the shore. You smile.

This artist / these two albums are my new key to a great day. And if I happen to just keep playing them all the way through the night, then so be it.
